Rama Raksha Stotram

Rāma Rakṣā Strotram – Prayer for holistic protection

The story of Rāmayana where Śrī Rāma gets separated from his consort Sītā is an allegory. I had written previously about the benefits of extolling Śri Rāma and the study of the epic Rāmayana https://vijayajyoti.com/extolling-Śri-Rāma/. Sītā was captured by the ten-headed demonic person Rāvaṇa and Śrī Rāma’s anxiety for Sītā was palpable until he crossed the great ocean with the help of monkeys to defeat Rāvaṇa and get her back. Similarly, we too have lost our peace running after the worldly possessions to make ourselves happy. We encounter numerous obstacles, some external based on circumstances and enemies and also our inner demons which are weaknesses that propel us to react constantly instead of responding. We too have to fight them, to get back what is truly hidden inside and is inseparable from us, the bliss.  We too have to cross the vast ocean of delusion caused by ignorance, killing the monsters of likes and dislikes to truly find ourselves. Rāma is the truth that is inside all of us. Rāma is true peace. Rāma is bliss. The meaning of Rāma is the one who can revel within himself. (रमन्ते अस्मिन् इति रामः).

Rāma Rakṣā strotram

The Rāma Strotram is the ultimate form of protection to dispel all the dark foes in our lives, both external and internal. Lord Rāma is like the blazing Sun that can completely burn our past sins and all our dark thoughts.

It was composed by Sage Viśvāmitra (Budha Kauśika) on the instructions of Lord Śiva (Hara) received in a dream. It has 38 verses in common usage these days apart from the verses of Dhyana (meditation) and Viniyoga (practice). However, the original source of this hymn is in Padma purāṇa which is concise (only 11 verses), wherein Mahādeva (Lord Śiva) ascribes the composition to Sage Vasiṣṭha who gave it to the preceptors Viṣṇu first, who then passed it on to Brahmā and finally to him (Śiva) who gave it to Nārada who then disseminated it among the people on the earth.

Benefits of Chanting

Verses 11-15 encapsule the benefits of chanting the hymn. The one who chants this regularly will be will be blessed with longevity, wealth, children and possess the positive attributes of Śri Rāma like humility and perfection in work. Those who remember the names of Rāma, Rāmabhadra, and Rāmachandra will be free from the sins, and will enjoy life and salvation. They are guarded against the invisible forces that work against us and therefore one will be without obstacles, thus ensuring an auspicious victory.

How to Chant

Padma Purāṇa mentions that one should chant this at least a thousand times to enjoy the benefits and can be recited while resting at home or going along the way. Yet another powerful way to recite this strotra is to start chanting in the holy period of 9 days of Navaratri in the month of (March) Caitra, starting from the Śukla pratipada (first day after new moon) until the Navami (9th day) which happens to be Śri Rāma’s birthday. This year it will be from March 22nd to March 30th 2023.

The chant of Rāma is always preceded by worshipping his messenger, Śri Hanumān.

I have compiled the verses from various legitimate sources and tried to translate it using the best of my abilities.

Thus begins the Meditation of this hymn.

I meditate on Rāmachandra, who has arms reaching down to his knees, holding a bow and arrows, seated in a lotus position, wearing yellow clothes, has eyes that rival the petals of a fresh lotus and looks pleased. Whose are eyes fixed on the lotus like face of Sītā, sitting on his left, whose colour is like that of rain-cloud, shining in various ornaments with long matted hair adorning him.
